Logbook guide

Keep your logbook (or the Service NSW logbook app) up to date so every hour counts. Bring it to each lesson and record drives accurately—this makes test day simple and stress-free.

Bring these to every lesson

  • Learner licence
  • Logbook or approved logbook app
  • Pen (if using paper logbook)
  • Glasses/contacts (if required for driving)

3-for-1 rule with an instructor

Your first 10 × 1-hour lessons with an accredited instructor can count as 3 hours each in your logbook (up to 30 hours total). The bonus helps you reach your required hours quicker. Note: Rules can change—check Service NSW for the latest details (including how night hours are counted).

Recording drives correctly

  • Start/end time and total duration
  • Conditions: day/night, weather, traffic
  • Route type: quiet streets, roundabouts, multi-lane, parking practice
  • Supervising driver’s name and licence number (paper logbook)
  • Signature/approval after each entry (paper) or request approval in the app

Plan your hours (smart, not rushed)

  • Build variety: short local trips, then busier roads, then complex intersections
  • Schedule night drives gradually—don’t leave them all to the end
  • Give each session a focus (e.g. mirrors & merging, roundabouts, reverse park)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting signatures/approvals (paper logbook)
  • Only driving the same route over and over
  • Leaving night hours until the last minute
  • Rounding times instead of recording actual duration

When you’re getting test-ready

  • Make sure every entry is complete and approved
  • Do a pre-test checklist drive with your instructor
  • Confirm current testing requirements with Service NSW

Regulations can change—always confirm current requirements with Service NSW.
